Project Execution

The legacy modernization follows a step by step approach. First we have to understand the business and technical assets of the customer and determine which assets are good candidates for the modernization. After determining the assets to be modernized we execute the transformation with our automated tools using our modernization methodologies and partner services.

Application Portfolio Management (APM)

FreeSoft's APM provides the customer with an inventory of its IT portfolio including hardware and software infrastructure, legacy application, business processes and even organizational structures in order to support the strategic decision of IT modernization. Therefore the solution focuses on the documentation of the existing IT system elements. The core of the APM solution is a software application, which is generally an on-line data store that is capable of generating diagrams, application maps, infrastructure drawings and text reports based on the information stored in a relational database, with very flexible query options. The information in the database comes from existing documentation of the IT system, and from a source code analysis carried out by unique code parser software tools.

APM - assessment project methodology

      • Understand the need of the customer management to provide valuable information about the IT portfolio
      • Collecting information on the IT infrastructure and the business processes via interviews and analyzing existing documentation
      • Create the data model of the APM tool, in cooperation with the customer
      • Record all existing and available information about the IT portfolio into he APM tool
      • Source code analysis with the FreeSoft toolkit and record application object information in the APM tool
      • Training the customer to maximize the benefit of the reporting options in the APM tool

Legacy transformation

FreeSoft's transformation solutions enable legacy users to implement the existing business processes and data of their IT system in a completely new environment while taking the possible lowest risk, within the shortest duration in a cost effective way. The target environment is J2EE, which builds a strong base for the strategic implementation of the SOA.

The transformation process is supported by automated converter tools with the following functionality:
  • parsing and analyzing application source code, store the information in various repositories (XML)
  • generating software components based on the repository information (metadata), iteration in generating components

Project methodology

      • Building the modernization strategy, project planning, bidding, building QA and test strategy based on the information gathered in the APM phase
      • Environment migration, re-hosting (JCL;CICS; etc.)
      • Automated database and data migration, data access migration to J2EE.
      • Data cleansing, data model consolidation
      • Automated transformation of the application into J2EE, transformation of the business logic and the presentation layer.
      • Workaround for non-convertible objects, manual intervention in the code.
      • Testing and QA. Unit test, integration test, regression test.
      • Re-engineering option based on UML.
      • Go production.
